Minnesota — Primary Service Area

Holzfäller LLC is a Certified Minnesota Stewardship Plan Writer and NRCS-approved Technical Service Provider (TSP), actively writing and administering plans across all of Minnesota including the following Minnesota counties:

Lake of the Woods County Home base. Mixed aspen, spruce, balsam fir, black ash, birch, and extensive wetland complexes define this landscape. SFIA and 2c enrollment is common here, and timber appraisal and harvest administration opportunities are strong. We know this county's timber markets, mills, and DNR foresters well.

Marshall County A heavily forested county with strong aspen and spruce components, Marshall County landowners are frequently pursuing SFIA enrollment, deer habitat improvements, and timber stand improvement projects. One of our highest-volume service counties.

Roseau County Mixed forest and agricultural transition land with significant SFIA activity. Many large family landholdings with multi-generational stewardship goals. Renewal plans and new SFIA enrollments are common.

Koochiching County Large contiguous forest tracts, significant black ash, and proximity to commercial timber markets make this county a strong fit for full-service forestry consulting — from stewardship planning through timber sale administration.

Beltrami County One of Minnesota's most diverse forest counties, with aspen, birch, pine, spruce, and extensive wetlands. Habitat work for deer, grouse, woodcock, and waterfowl is a common request alongside SFIA and 2c plans.

Clearwater County Transition zone between the lake forest and the agricultural belt. Recreational and hunting properties, food plots, and stewardship plans for smaller acreage owners are a specialty here.

Polk County Diverse landholdings ranging from river-bottom hardwoods to upland aspen. Timber appraisal and stewardship plan work in this county often involves properties with agricultural components.

Pennington County Smaller forest parcels, often combined with agricultural land, where 2c and SFIA programs provide meaningful tax relief for woodland owners managing their timber alongside farm operations.

Mahnomen County Aspen-dominated forest with wildlife habitat as the primary landowner goal. Tribal land adjacency adds ecological context to management planning in this county.

Red Lake County Small but growing service presence. Landowners here often own forested parcels adjacent to agricultural operations and benefit from stewardship planning and cost-share program navigation.

Don't see your county listed? If you're a Minnesota landowner in a neighboring county not listed above, reach out. We regularly travel to serve clients in adjacent areas and are always willing to discuss your property and goals. The list above reflects our current primary service footprint — it's not a ceiling.

North Dakota & South Dakota — Extended Service Area

Holzfäller LLC extends its reach westward into the forested and transitional landscapes of eastern North Dakota and the northeastern corner of South Dakota. While timber-dominated forests give way to oak savanna, shelterbelts, river-bottom hardwoods, and mixed-grass parkland in these regions, the need for professional land management, wildlife habitat consulting, NRCS technical assistance, and stewardship planning is just as real — and the supply of qualified foresters is significantly thinner.

As an NRCS-approved Technical Service Provider (TSP), Holzfäller's federal certification covers all 50 states, meaning EQIP and CSP cost-share services are available to landowners in North and South Dakota without any additional credentialing barriers. If you own forested, wooded, or transitional land in these regions and want a forester who will actually come to your property, we want to hear from you.

North Dakota counties currently served/being developed:

Cass County The Red River Valley edge of North Dakota, with shelterbelt corridors, wooded draws, and river-bottom timber along the Sheyenne and Red Rivers. Strong NRCS EQIP activity and landowner interest in wildlife habitat improvement and windbreak management.

Richland County Southern Red River Valley with river-bottom hardwoods, cottonwood, and oak along the Wild Rice and Sheyenne drainages. Landowners here benefit from NRCS cost-share for conservation plantings, timber stand improvement, and habitat work.

Ransom County Sheyenne River corridor with oak, ash, and elm on wooded hillsides and ravines. Recreational and hunting properties with growing interest in habitat management and deer/pheasant improvement plans.

Sargent County Transitional agricultural and riparian landscape in the southeast corner of North Dakota. Wooded draws and shelterbelts provide habitat management opportunities for upland game and waterfowl.

Dickey County Mixed prairie and wooded draws along the James River drainage. Landowners pursuing habitat improvement for pheasant, deer, and waterfowl in an area underserved by forestry professionals.

LaMoure County Rolling topography with wooded coulees, shelterbelt systems, and river-bottom hardwoods. NRCS program navigation and general land management consulting are the primary services here.

Barnes County Sheyenne River Valley hardwoods and oak-dominated hillsides make this one of the more forested counties in eastern North Dakota. Stewardship consulting, habitat work, and NRCS TSP services available.

Stutsman County Coteau du Missouri edge — oak parkland, wooded knobs, and pothole wetlands. A growing recreational land market with increasing demand for professional habitat and land management services.

Traill County Red River Valley with shelterbelt and riparian timber, cottonwood, and green ash. Windbreak management, timber appraisal, and NRCS planning are well-suited services for this county.

Grand Forks County River-bottom hardwoods along the Red and Turtle Rivers, with active land sales and recreational ownership. NRCS TSP services and general forestry consulting available to private landowners.

Walsh County Mixed agricultural and wooded landscape with shelterbelt corridors and riparian timber along the Forest River and Pembina tributaries. Habitat consulting and NRCS program assistance available.

Pembina County The northeast corner of North Dakota bordering Minnesota and Manitoba — closest geographically to Holzfäller's home base. River-bottom hardwoods, oak, and green ash along the Pembina and Red Rivers. Strong fit for cross-border landowners with property in both Minnesota and North Dakota.

Cavalier County Rolling terrain with oak and aspen pockets, shelterbelts, and pothole wetland complexes. A natural transition zone for landowners used to working with Minnesota-style forestry programs who also hold North Dakota ground.

Towner County Oak and aspen parkland on the Coteau — transitional habitat with growing interest from recreational landowners and duck hunters. NRCS TSP services and habitat consulting available.

Rolette County The Turtle Mountains extend into the southern edge of this county, bringing with them aspen, birch, and oak woodland that closely mirrors the forest types Holzfäller works with daily across northern Minnesota. One of the stronger forestry markets in North Dakota.

Bottineau County The Turtle Mountains proper — aspen, birch, oak, and jack pine on sandy glacial soils. The most forested landscape in North Dakota and a natural geographic extension of Holzfäller's Minnesota service area. NRCS TSP services, habitat management, and general forestry consulting available now.

McHenry County Oak and aspen parkland transitioning toward the Missouri Coteau. Recreational landowners, hunting operations, and shelterbelt management are the primary service needs here.

Pierce County Wooded coulees and oak parkland south of the Turtle Mountains. Growing recreational land ownership with interest in wildlife habitat improvement and NRCS cost-share programs.

Where We Work

Forestry doesn't happen at a desk — it happens on your land.

Holzfäller LLC is based in Williams, Minnesota, in the heart of Lake of the Woods County — but our work takes us across the lakes, forests, wetlands, and farm edges of northwest Minnesota and North Dakota to southern Wisconsin. We are a mobile, field-first operation. If your land needs a forester, we come to you.

Whether you own 40 acres of aspen in Roseau County, 800 acres of mixed hardwood in the Driftless Area of Wisconsin, a sugarbush in Bayfield County, or a recreational cabin property in Pine County, Holzfäller brings the same level of professional attention to every property — large or small, near or far.

We travel to your property. Site visits, timber walks, field inventory, and plan consultations all happen on-site, at your land, on your schedule. Distance is not a barrier — if you have land worth caring for, we want to help you care for it. Give us a call or fill out the Free Land Assessment form and we'll be in touch to set something up.

Wisconsin — Expanding Service Area

Holzfäller LLC is actively expanding into northwest Wisconsin, with a particular focus on the Northwoods counties where sugarbush operations, mixed hardwood management, and recreational landowners are most common. Ethan Erdmann is a Wisconsin native who grew up in central Wisconsin and holds a forestry degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, giving him deep roots in the state's forest landscape, programs, and culture.

Holzfäller is currently pursuing Wisconsin DNR Certified Plan Writer (CPW) status to write Managed Forest Law (MFL) plans. In the meantime, we can assist Wisconsin landowners with:

  • NRCS EQIP and CSP forest stewardship planning (as an approved federal TSP — TSP certification is nationally portable)

  • General forest management consulting and field assessments

  • Timber appraisals and harvest oversight

  • Bird-Friendly Maple habitat assessments for sugarbush landowners (Audubon program — Wisconsin is an active expansion state)

  • Drone aerial mapping and LiDAR forest inventory

Wisconsin counties currently served or being developed:

Burnett County Pine, aspen, and hardwood forest with strong recreational land market. NRCS cost-share programs and general management consulting available now.

Polk County (WI) Transition hardwood forest with mixed ownership and active land sales market. General consulting and NRCS services available.

Washburn County Mixed Northwoods forest with active timber markets and sugarbush operations — a natural fit for Bird-Friendly Maple assessments and NRCS planning.

Sawyer County Large contiguous forest tracts with recreational and investment landowners. Excellent target market for full-service forestry consulting once MFL CPW status is in place.

Bayfield County Prime sugarbush and hardwood territory, and one of Wisconsin's most active Northwoods forestry counties. A priority area for Bird-Friendly Maple program expansion.

Douglas County Mixed forest and proximity to Lake Superior create a diverse ownership and management landscape. General consulting and NRCS services available now.

MFL Plan Writing Timeline: Once Holzfäller receives Wisconsin DNR Certified Plan Writer (CPW) certification, we will be able to formally write and submit Managed Forest Law plans across Wisconsin. We expect to pursue this credential in 2026. If you are a Wisconsin landowner interested in MFL enrollment, contact us now — we can begin the relationship, assess your property, and be ready to file your plan as soon as our certification is complete.
