COST SHARE ASSISTANCE
WHAT IS IT?
Cost share assistance is a subsidy provided by the state to help landowners when it comes to affording management practices on their land. It is dependent on when funds are available and is usually a first-come first-served. Funds are allocated every year or every few years by state legislatures, US Federal government through USDA, as well as other entities outside of government assistance.
Do I need it?
That’s entirely dependent on you. If financial hurdles stand in your way of realizing what you want for your property then cost-share assistance is a great avenue to create affordability. A plan that costs $1000 may only cost you $500 or even less, and for some counties and jurisdictions you can get cost-share assistance for both new and renewals. Even a site-prep with tree planting across 20 acres could be thousands of dollars less when cost-share is available and applied for.
When should I apply for Cost-Share Assistance?
You should apply as soon as you are thinking of either getting a stewardship plan written or having a management practice done on your property. If you apply during or after a plan or practice is in progress you will not be eligible for cost-share assistance. I try hard to get every landowner to apply and will help them get the assistance if it’s available. I can’t promise you will receive it or guarantee it, but the worst answer is a “No”, the best answer is a “Yes” and never asking is leaving money on the table.
